A shocking number of women die due to domestic abuse in Hungary. Abusers are often two-faced; they behave exceptionally polite and friendly on the outside, but they turn violent and aggressive behind closed doors.

Fókusz reports that in Hungary, at least one woman dies due to domestic abuse per week. It is also known from statistics that one in five women suffers harm in her lifetime.

One in five Hungarian women suffer abuse

Domestic violence is violence or other abuse committed by one person (likely a spouse) against the other in a domestic setting, such as in a romantic relationship, marriage or cohabitation. Domestic violence takes some forms; including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, reproductive, and sexual abuse, which can range from subtle to violent physical damage such as rape, choking, or beating.

Júlia Spronz, a lawyer who works for the PATENT Association, shared her insides on the topic of domestic violence to Fókusz.

Patent Association provides legal aid and psychological assistance to victims of violence against women and those whose reproductive rights are curbed. They are a group of women’s rights defenders; lawyers, psychologists, as well as gender-based violence experts.

In abusive relationships, there is often a cycle of abuse during which tensions rise, and an act of violence is committed, but this is immediately followed by a period of reconciliation and calm. However, this peaceful period is never long-lasting.
